Two Wokingham Explorer Scouts have spent the last 7 months preparing themselves for 125 miles and 77 portages as part of the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race.
The race has been run over Easter weekend for the last 70 years and the race record for the 24h senior crews is still held by a former Wokingham Scouter. The two Explorers will take part in the 4 day stage race starting tomorrow at around 8:30 am and completing in the early hours of Monday morning at Westminster bridge.

The 8th March signaled that there were 500 days until the 24th World Scout Jamboree opens in the USA.
Wokingham District has 7 young people attending out of the 72 that were selected from across the Country back in December where over 200 Young people attended a special camp to find the lucky 72.
The selection process was only the start of their very exciting journey towards the Jamboree, as not only having to make new friends, learn new skills they have to raise over £3950 to pay for themselves and less …

There is an urgent appeal for parents to step forward to help keep a Beaver section open at 1st Woosehill.
Across the District there is a long list of young people wanting a space in Beavers but without volunteers the sections cannot run. The current leaders have notified the Group they are looking to step down and without replacements the section will have to close.

We are holding an information evening at Montague Park School on the 19th September 17:30 – 18:30.
We are looking to open a new Beaver section, and Group so please come along if you are interested in helping or you have a child aged 6.
There will be an activity for the youngsters running during this slot.

Steve Capel was officially invested as 1st Woosehill Scout’s new Group Scout Leader (GSL) at the Group’s first joint campfire, attended by all Sections. Steve joined new Beavers and Scouts as they took their Promises and reaffirmed that he would ‘do his best’ as he received the Group’s distinctive blue necker from youngest Scout. Following the ceremony, everyone gathered round the roaring campfire to sing songs and enjoy hot chocolate, marshmallows and cakes. A great way to mark a new era …

Thursday saw the District Annual review at the Waterside Centre, where around 35 people listened to the new Town Mayor provide her first official speech in the role.
It was a night for introductions as Lorraine Bolam – the new District Commissioner welcomed Alison Sutton and Nick Green to their roles as Deputy DC’s strengthening the District team.

Wokingham District Scouts are happy  to announce that Lorraine Bolam has agreed to take on the role of District Commissioner.
Lorraine had been acting DC since Keith Gambles stood down just over twelve months ago.
Lorraine comes with a long and experienced background in Scouting, having held appointments at Group, District and County levels in the past. At this weeks AGM she also announced her new District team to help carry the District forward into the future. Wokingham District is looking to start the cubs 100 years’ celebrations with the annual District Quiz.

Last year this was won by Arborfield Panthers Cub Pack and we look forward to seeing them defend their trophy.

Each team can consist of between 4 and 6 cubs with an average age of 9.
(This is to try to encourage a good mix of older and younger cubs to be included in the team).

There will be 5 rounds of questions consisting of:

Wokingham District is preparing to celebrate 100 years of cub scouts in 2016, the cubs officially started on 16th December 1916 and thus we will be holding a “Promise Party” on the Friday 16th December 2016.   Cubs from around the country will renew their promise at 7.16 pm (19:16) on the 16th, Cubs in Wokingham are invited to do this all together at one BIG PARTY.   However the Promise Party is actually the last of the events we have planned.

Most people know that whilst in Scouting you can work towards a wide range of badges and awards, but how many know you can also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme ?
Tonight at Wokingham’s Town Hall parents and other family members joined the Borough and Town Majors to award 25 young people Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
