Berkshire’s Scouting Summer – Postcard from 1st Sunningdale Explorers

Scouts from across Berkshire have celebrated the summer break in typically adventurous style with jubilant jamborees, exciting expeditions, and overseas adventure creating memories throughout the county. We will be featuring a few memorable trips to celebrate the new Scouting term, and to continue the positive summer vibes into the autumn – and beyond.

First up, it’s the turn of 1st Sunningdale who took a group of Explorers to Exmoor National Park at the end of August.

Participants stayed on a beautiful site, Horner Woods, run by the National Trust and Somerset Scouts. The park, which is just one of 15 national parks in the UK, as well as a designated International Dark Sky Reserve, is ideally suited to Scouting with the idyllic and secluded surroundings playing host to plenty of exciting activities, offering calm and serenity, as well as adrenaline-fuelled adventure.

For 1st Sunningdale, there were certainly plenty of thrills with kayaking, tree climbing, archery, mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking and coasteering all on the itinerary.

Explorer Leader Christian Leigh said: “There were some nerves when jumping into the sea from the cliffs, and in trying to get to the top of tricky climbs (and those nerves weren’t just with the Explorers!). They all bravely joined in the lot. And with plenty of time spent round the fire in the evening, and trips for takeaway on the sea front too, it was a great week for Sunningdale in the coast and countryside.”
