At last nights District AGM the warm up act was a Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Group presentation on their expedition down the River Wye.
The group of 5 Explorer Scouts spent 4 days and 3 nights paddling down the Wye from Glasbury to Hoarwithy stopping at various campsites on the way.
They had to pack all their kit for the journey in to barrels and dry sacks holding it all in the boats with Belts ropes.
The team said as the trip progressed they got this packing process down to 5-10 minutes each day so allowing a faster start each morning.
The key activity on route was to not only to stay dry but collect information, photos and ideas for their project and the idea was born about writing a short guide for a family trip down the River Wye.
The booklet that will be posted here shortly, covered everything a family would need to consider booking and packing for a similar trip. The team also looked at things to look out for on route including hazards and wildlife. They also covered some basic paddling techniques that would be required for such a journey.
They summed up the presentation with a “Top Tips” section covering Hydration and the need to use Sun cream.
Well done to all the lads and if you want to look at taking part in a D of E award please contact one of the Explorer leadership team.
